Are you watching closely?

We saw The Prestige tonight, and it was definitely better than I had expected.
Now I'm off to set all my clocks back an hour and watch Hugh Laurie on SNL.
I didn't really spend any of the movie thinking too hard about how everything was really happening, and I did purposefully because a few people have said how obvious some things were. I think that made the end a little more satisfying. For some reason, I honestly didn't expect Alfred to be a twin. I think it was because they were so committed to it, that it didn't really come to me until the end. And then of course everything made a lot more sense. How Sarah knew some days he loved her and some days he didn't.
The scene where Alfred tells her point blank "No. I don't love you. Not today," that was harsh. But very well played.
Olivia bothered me, for a couple reasons. One, she was hanging on Robert, when she really should have kept her hands off him. And two, even though Alfred was in fact two different men and one was really in love with her (which was slightly redeeming) she still knew he was a married man and really didn't give a damn. The fact that she told him he was supposed to leave his family at home where they belonged and then when Sarah killed herself she wanted to have him talk to her about it. Just...I really didn't like her.
And the fact that Robert was ready and willing to literally die everynight, just for the sake of revenge, really demented. He died every night just to set Alfred up for murder and take his daughter. That's all kinds of crazy, but in a way you can't help but sympathize with him. After all, sometimes Alfred was quite the bastard.
Funny sidenote, when Robert is about to be shot and they played the really loud, increasingly high pitched scary movie music and you know something bad is going to happen, I still managed to totally jump in my seat when the shot went off. I contend it was because it was so loud. Honestly.

Date: 2006-10-29 08:28 am (UTC)So the fact that Alfred got away with his life while his twin died for him in prison seemed very unfair to me, even though I don't suppose Robert was really Robert anymore and he was never going to be happy anyway.
I thought it was good, but I swear I figured out every plot twist about a half hour before it happened. LOL The first thing I noticed was that the gray, bearded guy looked very much like Christian. I thought that was odd, so I knew something had to be going on there, though it never occurred to me how involved it all was.
