Truth is a funny thing.

There are all kinds of truths. There are facts, proven by science with evidence to back them up. They can’t be argued. They can’t be changed.

But there are also personal truths. Things we believe with all our heart and soul to be completely and irrefutably true. We have nothing to prove it, no science or evidence to speak of, but still we believe in it undoubtedly.

Personal truths are tricky. Despite our fervent denial, they are ever changing, shifting on a moment’s notice. Something we believed all our lives can be unproven in an instant, leaving our world a chaotic mess in its aftermath.

So when we are faced with the truth, with the facts, it is often a hard pill to swallow.

“Well look who finally decided to join us,” Izzie announced from her seat in the relative quiet of a patient’s room, said patient was currently heavily sedated so he certainly didn’t mind the company. She gave Alex a small smile as she leaned back in the uncomfortable hospital chair and he gave her a short nod in return as he grabbed an empty chair next to Meredith and settled his lunch tray in his lap.

“Evil Spawn,” Cristina acknowledged expressionlessly.

“Where have you been? I thought Sloan just had you running errands for him this morning?” Izzie wondered curiously as she absentmindedly poked and prodded her food.

“Nah, I was in surgery,” Alex dismissed with a shake of his head before taking a generous bite of his sandwich.

“Sloan let you scrub in?” George asked, glancing up in mild surprise from his seat by the window.

“No,” he grunted with an annoyed frown. “He had me fetching cappuccino all morning. Dr. Montgomery needed some help though, so she had me scrub in,” he shrugged nonchalantly.

“Wait. What?” Cristina barked suddenly, collecting herself when she noticed all eyes on her. Shifting awkwardly in her chair, she stared challengingly at Alex who merely looked bored.

“I had a surgery with Montgomery,” he drawled slowly, enunciating as if she was a small child.

“I’ve been stuck on the gynie squad all morning,” she snapped as Meredith, Izzie and George shared a wary glance. “I’ve been up to my elbows in uterus and you got a surgery. You got my surgery. Why is She-Shepherd giving you my surgery?”

“Did it have your name on it?” he sneered, shoving his food away disgruntled. “Maybe you shouldn’t be asking why I got that surgery and start asking why you didn’t.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” she glared at him, neither one of them noticing the others watching in fascination.

“That means you screwed up. You helped Burke hide the fact that his hand was messed up, you risked people’s lives to help your boyfriend—”

“Hey, no one died, no one got hurt,” Cristina argued but he dismissed it with a disgusted snort.

“That’s not the point. You want to know why you’re getting stuck on gynie and you aren’t getting surgeries? Nobody trusts you,” Alex stated bluntly. “Not Bailey, not Webber, nobody. So don’t go blaming this on me.”

There was a long tense moment as everyone waited for Cristina’s reaction, but she shocked everyone when she angrily grabbed her tray and stalked out of the room. Izzie shared a worried look with Meredith as an awkward silence reigned in the wake of her departure.

Alex just went back to eating his sandwich.

“Have you seen Karev?” Mark asked in exasperation as he strolled up to the nurses’ station where Addison was reviewing one of her patient’s charts.

“It’s noon, Mark,” she sighed, sparing him a small glance from over her glasses before going back to her reading. “He’s probably at lunch.”

“Well he was supposed to meet me four hours ago,” he grumbled, obviously thoroughly annoyed.

“With your coffee?” she smirked, though there was little humor in it.

“Yes,” he acknowledged with a smug, tight smile.

“I needed an extra pair of hands,” she informed him casually, “and since he wasn’t doing anything important, he scrubbed in.” She finally discarded the chart and eyed him in bemusement. “You see Mark, Seattle Grace is a teaching hospital. This means that the interns actually have to participate in surgeries, or at the very least be in the same room. They aren’t training to be baristas.”

“When he can manage to consistently get me a decent cappuccino, I’ll think about letting him in my O.R.,” he said in concession. “And what are you doing stealing my intern? If I remember correctly you handed him over to me, which means you don’t get to borrow him whenever you feel like it.”

“He needs experience Mark,” Addison declared resolutely. “And he’s certainly not getting it by fetching you coffee and picking up your dry cleaning. You moved here, despite my many protestations, you decided to work here. Well, you want to work here? Then grow up.”

“Are you so protective of all the interns,” Mark drawled, a reserved expression on his face, “or is he…special?”

Addison made a face but failed to come up with a decent argument before Mark’s pager went off. Muffling a curse he eyed her, not happy with her reaction, before stalking off toward the elevator.

Her sigh of relief was prematurely cut off when she noticed who was now standing beside her, previously hidden by Mark’s tall form.

Bailey observed her with a critical, disapproving eye. “You and I need to talk.”
