It was strange to actually consider a place home.

Dean hadn’t really had a home since it burned to the ground with his mother inside. To him, all those years on the road, Dad and Sammy had been his home. Sam used to wonder why he hated that he went away to school. Or why he was always on edge when their Dad would send him off on a hunt of his own. He was never worried about his own hide, but theirs. Without his family he didn’t know what he would do.

When Dad died something in him broke and Sam was the only thing keeping him going. That and revenge. But then the demon was dead and he and Sam were left without a purpose, except to just keep hunting the rest of the evil sons of bitches roaming around.

But Sam was starting become too jaded, too much like him, and Dean was growing restless and hunting just wasn’t enough anymore.

He once told Sam that if he had spent his life in the suburbs he would have blown his brains out. So it seemed like the ultimate irony that an apartment on the outskirts of Metropolis, Kansas would be where he ended up. Still, it wasn’t his two bedroom apartment he considered home.

It was Chloe.

She was currently laughing enthusiastically at something her bumbling cousin-in-law said. She was a loud laugher, but he loved that about her. She never held anything back. Not her anger, her sadness, her happiness, nothing. And she had balls. Figuratively of course. She was hardheaded, brilliant, and had a stubborn streak that rivaled his own.

This was precisely the reason they were having Lois Lane’s birthday party in his living room. Chloe hadn’t let up until he gave in and relented.  And to be fair it was her living room too, so he hadn’t had much ground to stand on, but he had to put up a token protest. She had some really weird friends.

Clark Kent had his arm around the birthday girl and Dean, preferring to just watch the festivities, shook his head in amazement. He couldn’t figure out how a monumental dork like Kent had landed such a hot girl. He always figured Lois was like Chloe, headstrong and ambitious, and definitely too much woman for Clark Kent.

He made the mistake of telling Chloe that once and she was stifling laughter the whole time. And then she dropped the bomb.

“You know I used to have a huge, massive girly crush on Clark, right?”

He never looked at Kent the same since that day.

When he finally regained speech he managed to ask what the hell she saw in a guy like him. Was it the clueless expression? The ill-fitting suits?

“I guess I have a thing for the hero types,” was her simple reply.

Apparently farm boy was quite the rescuer of many a damsel in distress in their Smallville days. Goodie. But the bright smile Chloe gave him when she said that assured him of one thing. For some strange reason she considered Dean one of those hero types.

It was times like that he wanted to tell her what he and Sam did. He wanted to give her a real reason to feel like that about him. But he was scared.

And he felt like such a girl even thinking that, but it was true. He never thought he’d grow to appreciate a little piece of normality in the crazy, whacked out life he and Sam led. But he did, and more than anything he didn’t want to lose it. To lose her.

So he kept his mouth shut.

“Having fun?” Chloe interrupted his thoughts with a slight smile as she joined him near the kitchen. He gave a quick nod and lifted his beer. “Guarding the alcohol?” she smirked.

“With my life,” he assured her with an amused tilt of his lips.

“Well, far be it from me to force you to socialize, but I think Sam could use some rescuing,” she said, nodding to his beanpole of a brother who was being held hostage by Cat Grant, and looking more awkward and panicked by the second.

Dean rolled his eyes. Sam could take on a hellhound but froze up when a girl came on to him. Wuss.

“I’ll go save the spaz.”

“You’re such a good brother,” she said drolly before giving him a peck and rejoining her friends.

“Sammy!” he greeted his poor dork of a brother, giving him a smack on the back. “Cat,” he added with a nod toward the way too obvious woman practically hanging off Sam.

“Dean,” the blond gave him a toothy grin, dropping Sam’s arm and turning all her attention to him. “You’re looking…delicious. Are you as bored as I am?” she whispered conspiratorially. “Chloe’s not one for throwing parties, you know? I love her like a sister; don’t get me wrong, but seriously. Dullsville.”

“I don’t know,” he shrugged throwing his arm around Sam’s shoulders, “there’s booze, decent music. I figure if I do get really bored I can just try to get Kent drunk and watch the hilarity ensue.”

“There’s that,” she agreed dryly. “Oh look, there’s Jimmy,” she grinned, apparently deciding they weren’t fun enough, and headed straight for the poor boy in the bow tie.

“Thanks,” Sam muttered, embarrassed.

“Anytime,” Dean shrugged, handing him a beer and smirking in amusement. “She’s just too much woman for you. I get it.”

“Hey, I think she’s too much woman even for you. I almost feel sorry for Jimmy. She’ll eat him alive.”

“But what a way to go,” he sighed.

“If Chloe hears you talking like that I don’t think I’ll be able to protect you,” Sam warned him.

“If Chloe hears she’ll tear me a new one, but then we’d make up,” Dean grinned, “Hell Sam, sometimes I start a fight with her just so we can make up.”

“Dude,” Sam grimaced. “Ew.”

Dean just snorted.

“Hey, you busy tomorrow?” Sam changed subjects, eager to avoid any discussions involving Dean’s sex life.

“Was going to do some work on the Impala, other than that, no,” he murmured, taking a deep swallow of beer.

“I think we need to talk,” he said softly. “It looks like we might have a case.”

Dean didn’t need to say anything; he simply nodded in understanding and glanced regretfully at Chloe who was busy telling some elaborate story to Martha Kent.

“Out of town?” he muttered.

“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Not too far. Just outside Granville.”

Great. That meant he and Sam would be gone for a few days.

Looks like he’d have plenty of making up to do.

------------------------

Dean was running late.

Sam knew better than to worry. Dean was always running late, especially since he and Chloe moved in together. He would always offer up an excuse and Sam never questioned it.

Not that he believed him, but he was pretty sure he didn’t want to know what really kept Dean from leaving on time.

He finally arrived at his apartment a half an hour after he was supposed to, which actually wasn’t bad. The record was still holding at two and a half hours.

Dean looked way too pleased with himself when he walked through the door and Sam just held up a hand to forestall any excuses.

“Alright,” Dean grunted as he flopped into Sam’s recliner. He had mocked Sammy for buying it, but he’d be damned if it wasn’t comfortable. “So what’s the deal?”

“Morton, Kansas,” he sighed, tossing a couple of newspaper articles in Dean’s lap. “A couple of bodies have turned up. Sort of.”

“What do you mean, sort of?” Dean grumbled as he glanced through the cutouts.

“Most of the bodies are intact. One is…not,” he added hesitantly.

“Like dismembered?”

“Like broken apart on a cellular level,” Sam corrected with a grimace. “The first victim was a woman named Sarah Jensen. Married with two kids. She was found on her living room floor. They couldn’t find any physical reason for her death. She had no wounds, the coroner found no signs of a heart attack or aneurysm. And there were no signs of forced entry in the house.”

“Second victim?” Dean prompted tersely.

“Uh, Danny Moser,” Sam said as he shuffled through some paper. “He was found in the same condition. No marks or anything, just—dead. He was a cop. They found him on the outskirts of town, lying next to his car.

“And then there’s the third, uh, body,” Sam winced. “The police still aren’t sure who exactly it is, since all they found were tiny pieces of it.”

“Like the body was incinerated?” Dean wondered aloud.

“Only no signs of fire,” Sam agreed. “They found the—pile—in the local plant, near the lower levels.”

“What plant?”

“Fertilizer plant,” Sam admitted, looking uneasy. “Owned by LuthorCorp.”

Definitely not telling Chloe,” Dean muttered. There was no love lost between his girlfriend and the billionaire. He had to give her credit; Chloe had enemies in high places. If anyone could appreciate that, he could.

“Yeah,” Sam murmured in agreement. “There might be another man dead, but the body hasn’t been found. A Raymond Maxwell Jensen,” he recited as he squinted at the article in his hands. “Sarah Jensen’s husband. Word is he went missing around the same time. And he works at the plant, but then so does most of the town. It’s the main source of income in the city.”

“Great,” Dean sighed. “Looks like we have a case.” He closed his eyes, suddenly tired. “I better tell Chloe we’ve got a job out of town.”

“What’s your excuse this time?” Sam asked, bite in his tone. Little brother didn’t exactly approve of all his secret keeping.

“Missing person’s case,” he shrugged, pushing himself out of the recliner. “Close enough to the truth.”

Dean didn’t like lying to her, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t. Close enough to the truth was all he could give her.

That would have to be good enough.

lol. I guess just the initial premise was based on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, because the rest of the story is nothing like it :)

That is so totally in character for Dean. Which just means that when Chloe finds out. Massive, blow-out.

It was totally unintentional, funny enough. Raymond Jensen is actually a character in Superman mythology. It was just a happy coincidence :)

Really loved this chapter, especially the Dean centric part.

I love that he is so sure of his feelings for Chloe (just need him to trust her with his secret and her to trust him with hers!)

Thanks for the update, Can't wait for another one!!!!
