Eavesdropping wasn’t polite.
At least that’s what her mother always told her. Buffy and Xander, on the other hand, were never adverse to it. Especially in situations when someone was hiding something. The trouble with eavesdropping though is sometimes it reveals truths that you don’t want to hear and words that wound people and pride.
This time was no exception.
It was a sweet, but ultimately pointless gesture when Sam dragged Dean out into the parking lot to talk. The motel was barren, there were maybe one or two other guests in the entire establishment, and the walls were unsurprisingly thin. Not to mention, when the Winchester brothers fought, they didn’t exactly do it quietly.
Dean’s voice carried easily into their room and Willow, admittedly with a bit of shame, turned down the volume on the television so she could hear more clearly. Normally she wouldn’t dream of invading their privacy. They had their secrets, so did she. But something was grating at Dean and apparently it was wearing on Sam. Besides, she was pretty sure there was no other way to find out what was really bothering Dean, he wasn’t really the sharing type.
She wasn’t surprised when she realized their argument revolved around her. Her only visible reaction to Dean’s accusations was to look down at her folded hands in her lap, but guilt filled her.
Despite Sam’s defense of her, she knew what Dean said wasn’t wrong. She had promised them she could kill the demon, swore to them she was powerful enough. Honestly, she really thought she had been. But she was wrong and it nearly sent her spiraling out of control and could have gotten them killed in the process.
Hearing Sam’s footsteps approaching, she raised the volume on the television and set the remote off to the side, looking up at his tall figure stepping through the door, a tired, worn expression on his face.
“Everything okay?” she asked him, with the most innocent, curious look she could muster. She never used to be this good of a liar.
It was anything but okay from the look on Sam’s face, but she admired the way he tried to push all his frustrations back and put on a brave face for her. He did things like that all the time; it was something she loved about him. Always putting others ahead of himself.
“It’s fine,” he murmured with a small, hesitant smile as he took a seat beside her on his bed, the mattress dipping down from his weight and shifting her body closer to his.
Sam looked just as exhausted as she felt and it was well into the night. He really needed to get some sleep, and here she was, hogging his bed. “You look like you’re about to drop,” Willow frowned in concern as she stood, “you should go to bed. Get some sleep.”
He stood and her brow furrowed until she noticed that he was headed for the fold out couch. Willow put a hand on his arm and he stopped, looking down at her curiously. “Take the bed.”
“I thought you might need it,” he said in concern. “You had it pretty rough today.”
“And you look like you could pass out at any moment and frankly if you end up asleep on the floor, that’s where you’ll stay because you’re a little heavy, so no helpful lift up into bed from Willow,” she informed him with her infamous resolve face.
Sam laughed and grinned down at her before reluctantly nodding and heading back to bed, toeing off his shoes and stripping off his shirt before falling unceremoniously into bed in exhaustion.
“Will,” he mumbled, eyes closed as she remained standing, turning her attention from the door back to him, “make Dean sleep on the couch.”
“Uh huh,” she smiled in amusement, hovering in their darkened room until his breathing evened out and he fell quickly into sleep.
She slipped out of the room easily enough, making sure to lock the door securely behind her. Her eyes scanned the shadowy parking lot until she found Dean’s silent form seated on the sidewalk a few doors down.
Hands in her pockets and wind gently whipping her hair around her face, Willow walked slowly toward him, head bowed but gaze focused on him solely.
“Hey,” she said to get his attention. He knew she was there, after spending all these years as a hunter it was impossible for him not to know. He was just choosing to ignore her. At the sound of her voice though Dean looked up, giving her a small nod of acknowledgement.
“Hey,” he muttered, before his gaze returned to the vast night sky.
“I was hoping we could talk,” Willow admittedly, sitting down alongside him, leaving him space so she wouldn’t crowd him.
“What is it with me today?” he wondered to no one in particular. “Do I look particularly chatty? Or have you and Sammy been watching Steel Magnolias again and are in a sharing and caring mood?”
“Actually it was Terms of Endearment,” she replied with a nervous half smile, and Dean grinned lightly. “I just…I wanted to say I’m sorry. I messed up, I know. I overestimated myself and I could have gotten you and Sam hurt. I ruined your chance at killing the demon and…I’m sorry,” she shrugged, unsure what else to say.
“It’s not your fault,” Dean murmured, turning slightly to face her, his expression solemn, disappointed, but also apologetic.
“Uh—what?” Willow stammered in surprise.
“Things happen, it wasn’t a sure bet anyway,” he admitted reluctantly, trying his best to make light of the situation. “You tried, I just—I want this son of a bitch dead more than anything in my life, but it wasn’t your fault the plan didn’t work. It wasn’t anyone’s fault.”
“But you said—” She argued before stopping herself, embarrassed by her unintentional slip.
“Eavesdropping? Naughty girl,” Dean smirked, shaking his head dramatically. “What would Sammy think?” Willow just rolled her eyes.
“Shut up,” she mumbled, slapping him playfully on the arm. Dean laughed effortlessly, throwing his head back slightly and allowing himself to relax for the first time that night. “So…we okay?”
“We’re good,” Dean agreed softly, gaze growing a little distant again. “Although, I you want to make it up to me, I do have a few suggestions—”
“And it’s time for you to go to bed,” Willow cut him off with a light blush.
“My thoughts exactly,” he grinned as they stood, earning a humored groan from the redhead.
“Come on,” she chuckled, leading him back to their room where Sam was sleeping soundly. “Oh and Dean,” she added as she unlocked the door, “Sam says you get the couch.”
Dean’s amused grin vanished.

I liked the fact this followed the last ficcie like that - I mean, we heard the same thing but from other point of view and then got bonus talk in the end, hee. Besides, it was nice getting into Will's head too for a change.
Can't see Dean flirting with Willow at all though... can't see Sam doing the same either, to think of it... eh, maybe cause she's nowadays totally gay in my eyes and cause she doesn't seem his type. Their type. Whatever! I dunno what's up with that, meh.
Buuut anyway, really liked the ending, it was amusing :)

Date: 2006-10-23 06:06 am (UTC)I tend to see her as bi, mostly because I pretty much write het fics nowadays, so I figure it can go either way with Sam, but it's nothing definite. I just mostly wanted this one to end on a more lighthearted note.
Thanks :)

Date: 2006-10-23 08:20 pm (UTC)So are these drabbles going to have some particular direction, I mean other than wonderful tensed triangle places? Do you plan on using other characters from Buffyverse for example?
Btw there's a definite Willow/Sam affiliationg thing going on against Dean. Mwahahha, he deserves it, I'm sure. I'm also a younger sibling - I can relate to Sam's pain. Anyway, more coming soonish?

Date: 2006-10-23 09:37 pm (UTC)I'm a younger sibling too, so you and I both relate to Sam well. But I love Dean too, of course ;)
