2: Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off

Addison stepped into Joe’s, shaking off the smattering of raindrops that covered her and slid off her coat. Hanging it next to the doors where various others were lined up, she repressed a slight shiver from the cold night air and slipped onto the nearest empty barstool.

To say it had been a long day would have been a massive understatement. After her talk with Bailey, which left her just as uncertain as she had been, she answered Mark’s page. Thankfully he didn’t need much from her, just to answer a few questions about an upcoming surgery, mostly to calm the nerves of his patient more than anything else.

Mark was Mark though and couldn’t resist doing the littlest things to try and get under her skin. At first it was a gentle hand at the small of her back as he led her inside the hospital room, then words mumbled softly in her ear, his breath brushing against her neck. And the entire time she could feel far too familiar eyes upon her, watching their every move.

The entire experience was completely nerve-wracking.

“What can I get you?” Joe asked with a welcoming smile as he ambled toward her from behind the bar.

“Ginger ale,” she sighed, giving him a pale imitation of her most shining smile.

What she really wanted was scotch, and lots of it. But that was now off the table, thanks to Bailey, and she was forced to make due.

“Really hitting the hard stuff there,” a voice over her shoulder murmured sardonically.

Head turning around so fast she almost feared she had whiplash, Addison gave the newcomer a nervous half smile before turning back to the bar and focusing intently on the glass left in front of her courtesy of Joe. “Karev,” she muttered in acknowledgement.

Her hair was curtaining her face, enveloping her in shadows and shielding her from his view which she was very thankful for. She was almost sure her cheeks were covered in an embarrassing blush.

“I figured you more of the champagne type,” he smirked as he took a seat next to her, nodding to Joe when he left a beer in front of him as per usual, “not the cheap imitation stuff that won’t even give you a good buzz.”

“I am abstaining from alcohol,” she replied, glancing up at him tentatively.

“Yeah, well let me know how that goes,” he snorted, taking a deep swallow from his bottle and enjoying a small chuckle at her expense.

“I’ll have you know it’s going very well,” she declared with an arrogant air, turning on her stool to face him, giving him her most challenging expression. “It was a practical decision really. No more hangovers, no more expensive cab rides home. And no more questionable behavior,” she finished resolutely.

“That’s too bad,” Alex considered with a grin, “You’re a lot more fun when you’re smashed.”

The front door opened and Addison found herself glancing at the entrance, just to distract her from her current conversation. Sadly, the newest patron failed to send relief coursing through her.

“Oh screw it,” she muttered, “Joe!” she bellowed, easily getting his attention. “Rum and coke, without the coke.”

Hearing the barest of snickering to her right, Addison glared at Alex, shaking a warning finger at him, “You tell Bailey and I’ll make sure you’re working in the pit for months.” He just held his hands up in defense and turned his attention back to his beer.

The sound of the stool on her left scooting slightly closer caught her attention and Addison spared Mark a glance as he sat down beside her, offering her his most winning smile. It wasn’t returned.

“Are you going to ignore me all night, Addison?” Mark murmured as he flagged down Joe.

“Of course not,” she denied, “I don’t plan on being here all night.”

“We used to do this all the time,” he reminded her with a soft smile. “Go out, grab a drink, talk. Can’t we do that again? What are you so afraid of?”

“It never ends at a drink and a talk,” she countered with a glare, trying her best to forget that Alex Karev was still sitting beside her, listening to their every word. “That’s the problem.”

“I don’t see the problem,” Mark grinned teasingly. “We’re good together, Addison.”

“I’m not doing this now,” she sighed in frustration, pushing her still untouched drink away from her and stood, turning her back on him and heading for the women’s restroom.

She stood inside the bathroom, staring blankly into the mirror above the sink for a long moment. She had no real purpose in there, but she needed a place, any place, to spend just a few minutes without Mark hovering over her. There was still a good chance, if he was feeling particularly determined that night, that even the ladies’ room wouldn’t keep him away. Apparently though chance was on her side that night. No one disturbed her.

Splashing her face with a little water, Addison took a deep, calming breath and patted her face dry.

Stepping outside, she came to an awkward halt in the darkened hallway as she nearly walked into a waiting Alex Karev. She made to step around him but he stopped her with a soft hand on her arm.

“Do you mind…” her annoyed voice trailed off as he simply stared at her, seemingly searching her eyes for something, what she didn’t know.

Mouth falling open once more to say something and nothing, her words were cut off as he pulled her to him, pressing his lips firmly to hers and coaxing her to respond in kind. Feeling like she was in auto-pilot, Addison fumbled momentarily before returning his hard kiss fully, not shying away when she felt the brush of his tongue against her lips.

All too soon he was gone and it took her a second to open her eyes to look upon him. He stood there, silent and unmoving until a slow, arrogant smirk crossed his handsome face.

“What?” she asked defensively, pulling away from him with a jerk.

“You’re fun when you’re sober too,” he grinned, far too pleased with himself.

She went from stunned to indignant in a heartbeat, turning on her heel and marching toward the bar. Throwing a few dollars on the bar, she grabbed her coat; ignoring Mark’s curious eyes as she tugged it on hastily and threw open the door, stepping outside without a backward glance.

If it hadn’t been for the smug form of his own intern lingering in the hallway, Mark would have thought nothing of her angry outburst.

The cool air was biting as Addison walked the streets of Seattle. The bar wasn’t far from her hotel and she thought the fresh air might do her good. Only a few minutes after she started walking did she remember she was not a fan of nature and air, fresh or not, did nothing for her.

So far her plans involving Alex Karev had failed miserably. First, there was avoidance. But that was thrown out the window with Mark’s page that morning. Then there was no drinking. Well, technically she didn’t drink and yet she still ended up with her lips plastered against his.

Well she had a new resolution. From now on, no more dark corners or halls. They just led to more problems. Especially when Alex Karev was hiding in said darkened halls. She was just going to go into work tomorrow and pretend this night never happened, yet again.

And definitely make sure Bailey never found out.
